iOS 27 Parental Controls and Child Safety Features: What's New

Apple shipped a major Screen Time update with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on 14 September 2026. Parents get Ask to Browse for new websites, Time Allowances by app category, Schedules across the week, stronger Communication Safety, and a redesigned Screen Time screen that is easier to manage in the moment.

Start with a child Apple Account

Apple treats the child account as the foundation. It turns on age-based App Store limits, adult website limits, and age-appropriate media rules. In its June 2026 preview, Apple said a child account is required for children under 13 (with regional age rules noted in Apple footnotes) and available for children up to 18.

In iOS 27, Setup Assistant lets parents begin with a few essential apps, a curated starter set, or only the apps they choose. You can expand later with Ask to Buy, which still requires approval before a free or paid App Store download or in-app purchase.

Ask to Browse: approve new websites

Ask to Browse is the Safari counterpart to Ask to Buy. When a child tries to open a website that is not already approved, they send a request. You get it in Messages and can allow or deny it. Apple says it works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and that Ask to Browse also covers other supported browser apps after the Screen Time update.

According to Apple Support, Ask to Browse is on by default for children under 13. Limit Adult Websites is on by default for children under 18. In some places, parents cannot turn certain child settings off.

To manage it: Settings > Family > child's name > Apps & Websites, then choose Limit Adult Websites or Ask to Browse (Approved Websites Only). On some devices the same choice also appears under Screen Time Restrictions > Filtering.

Communication Safety now covers gore and violence

Communication Safety already blurred detected nudity in Messages and FaceTime. Apple's June 2026 preview said that protection was on by default for users under 18. With iOS 27, Apple says it can also block detected gore or violent content in shared images and videos, including during live FaceTime calls, and show a warning with extra resources. Confirm the Communication Safety toggle after you update.

Parents can still require approval before a child adds new contacts in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone. That contact gate is separate from Communication Safety, but the two work well together for younger kids.

Time Allowances and Schedules

Time Allowances let you set how long a child can use apps across categories such as Entertainment, Games, and Social Media, then fine-tune each category. Apple shows age-based starting guidance informed by expert research, including work with the American Academy of Pediatrics on adapting its Family Media Plan for Apple products. Treat those numbers as a draft, not a prescription.

Reporting from 9to5Mac adds a few practical details: parents can create custom categories, move apps between them, assign an allowance when approving an Ask to Buy download, and have websites tied to an app follow the same allowance.

Schedules answer a different question. Time Allowances cap how long. Schedules decide when an app is even available, for example during school hours or after bedtime.

Redesigned Screen Time

The Screen Time home screen now leads with average usage and most-used apps. From there you can pause access for dinner, grant a short extension, or switch schedules without hunting through nested menus. Apple says the new Screen Time experience requires every Family Sharing device to be on version 27 software.

If the new layout is missing, check that the child's device and your parent devices are all updated. Apple says the new Screen Time features need every Family Sharing device on the matching version 27 release.

How to set up iOS 27 parental controls on iPhone

These steps follow Apple Support's Family settings path. Exact labels can shift slightly after an update, but the order stays the same.

1. 1Update every device in your Family Sharing group to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and matching watchOS or visionOS releases if those devices are in the group.
2. 2On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap Family, then tap your child's name.
3. 3Confirm the child uses a child Apple Account. Create one during device setup if they do not have one yet.
4. 4Choose starting apps: a few essential apps, Apple's recommended starter set, or only the apps you select.
5. 5Open Apps & Websites. Under website filtering, choose Limit Adult Websites or Ask to Browse (Approved Websites Only), then review allowed apps. You can also reach Filtering under Screen Time Restrictions if that path is shown on your device.
6. 6Open Communication Safety and turn it on so detected nudity, gore, or violent content is blocked before viewing or sending.
7. 7Open Time Allowances, add a daily budget using Apple's age-based suggestions as a starting point, then fine-tune individual categories.
8. 8Set Schedules for school, meals, or bedtime, then use the redesigned Screen Time summary to pause or extend access when you need to.

What iOS 27 still does not fix inside YouTube

Screen Time is strong at the device layer: which apps open, for how long, and which websites Safari can load. It is not a YouTube channel whitelist. A child who is allowed the YouTube app can still land on channels you never approved, Shorts, and recommendation loops unless you also use YouTube's supervised tools or a separate player.

Practical stack for many families:

• Use iOS 27 Ask to Browse, Time Allowances, and Communication Safety for the phone itself.
• Limit or schedule the YouTube app if open browsing inside it is the problem.
• For channel-only viewing without Shorts and the standard feed, use a whitelist player such as Kivvie.
